Course Structure

What Is BSAC?

BSAC (The British Sub Aqua Club) is the national governing body for recreational SCUBA diving in the UK, as well as an internationally recognised training agency providing ISO rated courses.

The courses are broadly similar in terms of content between different agencies (PADI, SSI etc.) however the level of skill required varies hugely based on where you do it, typically learning in the UK leads to more comfortable and better disciplined divers.

The Course

The course conforms to international standards, and exceeds it where possible. It consists of 4 main parts, outlined below. When possible we try to teach all the Open Water lessons as part of fun 3 day weekend trip to some of the best shore diving sites in the UK. Past trips have been to Pembrokeshire, Cornwall, and Anglesey. Alternatively training can be completed at Stoney Cove, an inland site near campus.

Theory Knowledge

The course consists of 6 theory sessions. Including using Nitrox, tides, planned decompression, and rescue skills.

Pool Training

Consists of 1 lesson teaching more advanced in water rescue skills, plus one session teaching drysuit drills if this is your first time using one.

Dry Practical

Two sessions teaching out of water practical skills. The first includes learning how to give CPR and rescue breaths to an unconscious casualty, whilst the second focuses on how to safely assist in manage a group of divers before, during and after their dive from the surface.

Open Water

The course consists of 5 required open water dives used to learn new navigation skills, how to use and deploy an SMB, and demonstrate good buoyancy and gas planning. After qualification there are a series of depth progression dives from 20-40 metres.
